The Protect Oakland Renters initiative is a common sense proposal to provide Oakland renters the strongest protections against excessive rent increases and illegitimate evictions available under state law. I urge you to place it on the November ballot without delay.

The measure will NOT discourage or impact new residential development in any way, because its enhanced rent stabilization measures do not apply to buildings constructed after 1983. It would NOT deprive current landlords of a fair return on their rental properties because it establishes an administrative path for a landlord to recover costs when fair return is impeded due to specific conditions. The Mayor would still appoint members to the rent board (with Council approval) and single family and condominium homeowners would not be subject.

Rent stabilization and eviction protections are simply the most effective available tools local government has to stem displacement.
