    I strongly suppost this item.

I walk across Broadway from Lawton to Rockridge Blvd every day with my son. I am especially in favor of the Hawk Lights that are going in. Crossing that street feels like playing Russian Roulette with cars. Some see me and do not stop. Others are oblivious to myself and my (large) stroller.

Since each direction is two lanes wide, it is not uncommon for the driver in one lane to stop for me, only to have drivers in the second lane unaware of me and zoom by while I am in the middle of the road. Even more dangerous!

Drivers are simply unaware that pedestrians exist and have the right of way. The road diet will make cars travel more slowly and realize that this is a residential area. The road needs to be shared among cars, cyclists, and pedestrians.

    Dear Council Members,
I strongly support this agenda item because Lawton and Broadway is a very dangerous crosswalk. I use this intersection every day to get to BART and am scared every time I cross Broadway as cars often do not slow down for pedestrians. This crosswalk is one of the only connections for Upper Rockridge residents to get to college Ave and BART. I have two children that I will never let use that crosswalk because it is too dangerous. I hope you will support this important this important community improvement item.
    Thank you,
    Lara Coffin

Dear Councilmember Kalb and full council, please support these vital pedestrian safety improvements in Rockridge. Like many of my neighbors east of Broadway, I use the crosswalk at Lawton daily to reach BART and the College Ave business district. The crosswalk is the cornerstone of our walkable community, but today, the Lawton/Broadway intersection is unsafe for both drivers and pedestrians. I have personally witnessed many auto collisions. Once, I was nearly hit myself, jumping out of the way of a car who didn't see me, even though the other 3 lanes had stopped to allow me to cross. Last January, a colleague from work was in fact struck trying to cross Broadway at dusk, and he tweeted about it:

Crossing Broadway can be scary, and we are in desperate need of pedestrian safety improvements. On behalf of my wife and son, I urge you to support this project, and please accept my gratitude in advance!

    Dear Council members-
I am a homeowner on Rockridge Blvd. I strongly support the Upper Broadway Road Diet. I cross Broadway daily at the Lawton crosswalk to take BART to work, walk my child to school, and to shop and dine on College Ave. With two wide lanes in each direction and minimal controls, cars speed over 40 miles per hour as they exit or approach Highway 24. Broadway is like having a freeway through my residential neighborhood! There have been multiple collisions at the intersection in the four years I have lived in the neighborhood, particularly on rainy winter nights when the road are slippery and visibility is limited. I have had a few close calls as well. I strongly support the road diet to make my neighborhood more accessible for all users of our roads, including bicyclists and pedestrians. Please adopt the Oakland Public Works recommendation to complete this needed improvement.
