My name is David Peters, I live in District 3 at 555 Brockhurst St. I deeply OPPOSE the increase in business taxes on small businesses - particularly small Black businesses - with revenues > $250k year and that are deeply unprofitable. I am on the Board of Directors of Community Foods Market, the 1st new full service grocery store in this part of West Oakland in 40 years. These neighborhoods were a food and employment desert for 40 years, and CFM provides healthy foods and employment opportunities to mostly Black essential employees 80% of whom live within a few blocks of the market. Store revenues FAR exceed $250k annually, but the store is unprofitable. This measure favors Safeway over small community groceries. Please exempt community groceries and raise the threshold. This proposal is yet another stone of racism in the pockets of community businesses that have suffered hundreds of years of systemic racism.
