2.16 21-0635 Subject: Declaring Gun Violence A Public Health Crisis
Form: Councilmember Reid
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Declaring Gun Violence In The City of Oakland A Public Health Crisis And Requesting The Alameda County Board Of Supervisors To Deploy Resources To The City Of Oakland's Neighborhood Violence Prevention Programs And Services
As stated my others in the e-comments and, hopefully, publicly, I urge all Council members to support the Resolution of Council member Treva Reid in which she declares that Gun Violence in Oakland is a Public Health Crisis. As the Faith in Action East Bay Ceasefire community engagement coordinator for the monthly community walks, the reaction we get from the community demonstrates that we must do what's earthly necessary to address this "crisis". Council member Reid requests that the Alameda County Board of Supervisors deploy resources to Oakland's Neighborhood Violence Prevention Programs and Services, including Ceasefire, which until the pandemic in March 2020, was successfully reducing and maintaining a low gun violence rate of 50%. Since, in Oakland across the nation, service providers were not deemed as essential workers, and therefore, we are once again challenged with a "do over" that's sorely needed. It's imperative the the AC Board of Supervisors participate in addressing this crisis by funding necessary and essential services/resources.
Thank you.

I am a volunteer with the East Bay group of Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America. I urge the City Council to support Council Member Treva Reid's resolution; declaring gun violence in Oakland as a public health crisis. Gun violence affects ALL of Oakland; either directly, or consequentially. Supporting Violence Prevention programs and services with additional funding will only help support their efforts to end this public health crisis. Thanks for listening
