As of November 27, 2021 there have been 127 homicides in Oakland. Oakland has a reputation as being a lawless city where anything goes. Our population has grown by 60,000 people since the census but the number of police is well below what a city the size of Oakland should have. Many police are taking early retirement or leaving for better jobs elsewhere. We need to invest in making Oakland safe and part of that has to be an adequately-staffed police force. I also strongly urge more be done at the academies around de-escalation training, unconscious or implicit bias training and education, and for greater police and community engagement initiatives to ensure Oakland has a police force that will treat people with respect.

Not until we look at the systemic problems within the Oakland Police department; new academies with a racist and antiquated curriculum needs to be addressed. In addition, if you attend the academy and you leave you are required to payback the training salary. Also when you graduate you are committed to being an active police officer in the Oakland Police Department for at least 2years. If we continue to graduate poorly trained individuals, we will keep getting the same poor quality of servants to the community.
