    Please hold this item. It imposes artificial limits on the amount of life-saving traffic calming that can be permitted in partnership with community organizations. Oakland has a traffic violence epidemic, and OakDOT must partner with community groups to enable them to add as much traffic calming as possible to our streets, as soon as possible, to reduce dangerous driving especially along the High Injury Network and near community points of interest.

    This resolution as drafted limits the number of pilots artificially and would deny scores of Oaklanders the opportunity to get the traffic calming they need and deserve. As an example, several schools have expressed how desperate they are to make changes so parents can feel safe letting their kids walk/bike to school. We should not prevent them from installing and maintaining their own traffic calming when OakDOT cannot serve them in a reasonable time frame

    We should not put limitations on safety improvements, rather we should work together to identify what needs to change, so that OakDOT can deliver as much physical traffic calming to stop as much dangerous driving as possible. OakDOT needs to say what it needs to increase its output, and not put artificial constraints on safety which this resolution attempts to do.

    Please hold this item. It has come to my attention that OAK DOT has only meet with Council Member Fife staff once. I support this item however the legislation should be written collectively so both community members and OAT DOT can benefit.
