    Dear City Council Members

I am speaking as chair of Oakland's Mayor's Commission on People with Disabilities, and as a legally blind person myself. On top of the many other important reasons for supporting measure U, on top of the many essential functions that OakDOT provides, keeping OakDOT properly staffed and funded is essential for ADA compliance. Even from a fiscal standpoint, we spend a lot of money each year on litigation as a result of poorly maintained and non-compliant sidewalks, OakDOT's paving team, which is funded by measure U, is essential to both resolving said litigation with minimal fees and problems, but tackling the problem proactively to prevent litigation in the first place, improving everyone's quality of living in the process. Not funding OakDOT is an ADA problem that will only worsen the physical and financial state of the city as a whole. I implore you take decisive action to restore measure U funding through a bond issuance as soon as possible, and to keep OakDOT as fully staffed and growing as they tell you they need.

Dear City Council, I encourage you to support item 10. It is essential we fund the OakDOT paving and street safety program and support the scheduling of the 2025 bond sale for Measure U. There have been too many preventable deaths on the Oakland streets, including the tragic death of pedestrian on Seminary Ave near where I live, a tragedy not only for the victim and the family, but something that truly impacted the whole neighborhood. Not only are we in need of safer streets, but taking action will actually save money in the long run due to reducing cashing settlements to victims, costs of emergency responses, and increase in prices if we push this off for longer. The time is now to take steps to make our streets safer. Thank you for supporting Item 10 on behalf of concerned citizens in Oakland.

    Dear City Council Members,

I urge you to support Item 10 and schedule the Measure U bond sale this spring. Each year, over 30 people die on our roads and hundreds more suffer life-changing injuries. This is unacceptable and preventable. Funding from Measure U will immediately make Oakland a better place to live. It will enable critical street safety and paving projects that reduce emergency costs, prevent rising expenses due to delayed maintenance, and most importantly, save the lives of our neighbors and family members.

This is no time to hesitate, please do not wait for a “better time” while lives are at stake. Approve Item 10 and move forward with the Measure U bond sale to ensure we have the resources to make our streets safer now.

    Thank you,
    Will Freyman
