I am a Palestinian-American and resident of Oakland. I have been deeply saddened by the extreme escalation in violence and am in full support of this resolution. I am deeply afraid for my family still living in the West Bank. Already over 14,500 Palestinians have been murdered since October 7th. There are thousands more buried under rubble and thousands injured blocked by the Israeli government from receiving the proper medical aid they deserve. Israel has committed terrible war crimes, and I worry for the future of Palestinians. We must call for a lasting ceasefire. We must divest from Israel and apartheid. I am grateful to my city for passing this resolution and hopeful that this will help result in a free Palestine. We aren't free until we are all free!

I support the council of Oakland to pass a resolution to call for a permanent ceasefire. Every day we wait, more and more people get murdered by the state of Israel. So far there have been over 19,000 innocent civilians that have been killed and over 35,000 injured. For those saying this has nothing to do with Oakland, I’d like to remind you of the oppressive nature of the Oakland police department and how they have murdered innocent black people in this city. Well who do you think trains the police in the United States on their brutal tactics and abuse of authority? That’s right, it’s the IOF and this training will only intensify over the years if we don’t put a stop to this and end the occupation of our Palestinian family. We all have the power to make a difference and a change in this world and community matters. We have strength in numbers and that has been Oaklands power for years. We do not stand with the genocide being committed on Palestine and we will see a free Palestine. End the occupation, free Palestine, and free all oppressed people everywhere in the world.

I don’t know how to explain to you why you should actively oppose genocide.

I demand solidarity and a resolution for the Palestinian community. I urge the council to push for an immediate permanent ceasefire which is the bare minimum and further more push for land back. We cannot in this moment of time be neutral as an entire genocide unfolds before us. As Elie Wisel once said “We must always take sides. Neutrality, helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented”. You are complicit, have blood on your hands & on your name if you sit back and witness the atrocities happening in Palestine. Raise your voice, use your privilege and fight for what is right. Let us remember that this generation and the ones to come will be the ones incriminating you as they witness your neutrality. How many more innocent civilians have to die in order for you to take a stand. Stats prove that 13,000 individuals have died and that includes 6,000 plus children with 30,000 being injured and 6,000 missing.

This resolution is focused on the immediate needs of a population who has been relentlessly bombed for 45 long days. It’s humane and the bare minimum. Anyone who is demanding that this document condemns Hamas is focused only on being the victim. The point of this resolution is to save lives. It’s overdue and I commend Oakland city council for bringing this to the table. If it passes, this city council will be celebrated and supported by the mass of constituents who I know support saving Palestinian lives.

This is a no brainer given the indiscriminate widespread destruction in Gaza and loss of innocent lives of children, women and elderly at levels unprecedented.

I understand the City Council's desire for peace and the preservation of life.
Therefore, I suggest the inclusion of the following to help explain the current situation and the city's call for a cease fire to preserve life now and in the future.
Whereas, the Hamas governing authority in Gaza attacked Israel on October 7 with the objective to capture and kill, in the most barbaric and heinous manner known to the world, as many civilians as possible, thus violating international law, and
Whereas, the Hamas governing authority of Gaza does not recognize the existence of the State of Israel and has an officially stated objective to erase its Jewish population and existence,
We the City Council of Oakland resolve that the cease fire in Gaza include the Hamas recognition of the State of Israel and abandonment of its murderous goal.

I am an Oakland resident of District 3 and I support the call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We can’t sit silent while we witness a genocide and ethnic cleansing funded by our tax payer dollars. This is an Oakland issue and calling for a ceasefire and permanent end to the occupation doesn’t mean that Oakland issues are going ignored. We are not free until we’re all free.

As a Jew, I promise you it isn't anti-semitic to support a ceasefire - So many of my people are operating out of trauma but forgetting that Judaism values all life is sacred, Zionism just creates death. Stand on the right side of justice and call for a full cease fire and ends to the genocide of Palestinian people!! Thank you

I'm a Jewish Oaklander and I strongly support a ceasefire (rather than just a pause). I've also been a AD18 delegate to the CA Democratic party, where I was appalled to see AIPAC held a session at a convention one year. As a Jew, I've felt morally compelled to work on Palestinian liberation for years, so I know we cannot go back to the status quo after this. We must affirm our support for Palestinians' human rights, end the illegal occupation, and end U.S. complicity in war crimes and genocide. Groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch agree with Palestinians and Israeli rights groups that Israel's government has been perpetrating a system of apartheid. Not in my name! Not with my tax dollars! I joined 700 other Jews and allies on November 13 at the Oakland r federal building to demand a ceasefire and Palestinian freedom/equality. There are many of us demanding action.

I’m an Oakland resident and I strongly support calls for a ceasefire. Growing up Jewish in the Bay Area, I was taught by elders to say “Never Again” to any form of discrimination, ethnic cleansing, or genocide. Now in 2023 as our US tax dollars fund the murders of Palestinian families, we must stand up to say Never Again for anyone. Never Again means now. I strongly support this resolution and urge our elected representatives to do the same. Thank you.
