From: Councilmember Fife
Recommendation: Adopt A Resolution Affirming Oakland's Love Life Commitment And Support For The Congressional And Worldwide Calls For An Immediate Ceasefire In Gaza
I completely support the call for a permanent ceasefire. Our tax dollars are funding this and we have a responsibility to speak up and end this genocide.
I'm an Oakland resident and physician and I please ask you to vote to pass this ceasefire resolution - the loss of life in Palestine has been devasting for all of us and we need to deescalate the violence if we want any chance to rebuild and save the lives of the remaining Palestinians. Thank you for following Oakland's incredible legacy to stand up for peace, human rights, and revolution. Ceasefire now and end the occupation!
I support this resolution. Oakland has a long history of activism against oppression among people of color. This resolution is a natural extension of that fight for the oppressed. Currently, Gaza is experiencing the full weight of the Israeli and US military despite the fact that many of its population are children. Palestinians deserve to live safely, without fear of their homes getting destroyed, without fear of living in an unjust legal system, and basic human rights of clean water, shelter, and land. They deserve not only a pause but a ceasefire!
As a resident concerned about the escalating conflict in Gaza, I urge you to issue a strong statement calling for an immediate ceasefire. Our community's voice can be a powerful force for peace and human rights in this critical moment.
The city of Oakland must stand against genocide. We must call on our national leaders to demand a permanent ceasefire and support a two-state solution in Palestine.
Ceasefire—a real one, not a pause—now. Our CA senators are not listening to us. Neither is the White House. We want the killing of Palestinians to stop. Let Oakland be on history’s record with our objection. Almost 15,000 Palestinians dead today. This is not the way.
We must put and end to the Israeli government's devastation of Palestinian people and their home. Support a ceasefire now and help us move toward long-sought peace
Jewish and in support of this resolution.
Be counted among those who REPRESENT their constituents and RAISE YOUR VOICES for a CEASEFIRE NOW. The world cannot wait. And the world is watching.
My colleague, Rabbi Allan Berkowitz, recently wrote these words. I ask that his wisdom be reflected in any resolution the council approves.
"One can be pro-Palestinian (and certainly pro Palestinian human rights) and not anti-israel. Much of the anger and hate out there right now operates with a dialectic: you have to choose. And on both sides there are partisans who demean and dehumanize anyone who states one of those positions.
As humans, we can and should be able to condemn the slaughter of Israeli victims; their children; the raping of their women; and the celebrating on social media of all that.
As humans, we can and should be able to also hold empathy for the massive suffering in Gaza (and to speak out against it in whatever way as long as it doesn't distill down to the dialectic of one or the other).
And(!) to equate support for Israel as justification to attack/silence/physically harm/call for the destruction of Jews is to reveal oneself as a vicious tyrant. We now live in a country where synagogues and Jewish institutions need armed guards and Jews are discussing just how 'public and visual' we should be in certain spaces, out of fear of unsolicited physical attack."
I am an oakland resident and i strongly support this resolution to call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. We must be on the right side of history and do everything we can to end the occupation of the Palestinian people. Free palestine, end the occupation now!
I support Rep. Barbara Lee and call on all Oakland elected officials to follow her leadership in representing Oakland’s values in the sponsorship of HR 786. Passing a ceasefire resolution does not make Jews unsafe in Oakland nor is it anti semitic. As a Jewish Oakland resident, I strongly stand in support of an immediate and permanent ceasefire. I call on Oakland CIty Council to join the worldwide call for ceasefire and to also lead major American cities by being the first large city to make this declaration.
Right now, 1.5 million people have lost their homes. Somewhere around there, at any rate, its hard to tell in this disaster. Many of them will likely be able to return eventually, but many thousands will return to rubble. Please use your voice to call for them to come home in peace.
The most basic moral challenge is to refuse to do evil, even when it wraps itself in the language of righteous retribution or unpleasant necessity. Please speak for the difficult work of just peace.
